The Ugly Duckling’s Elder Brother: the Twins, 2500mm

After the killer New Year holiday the I-want-a-big-twin-engine bug bit me hard into really building it.

Thank God, I’d gained a bit of skill...

I did it based on my experience with the field-tested little Twins cargo plane.

Characteristics:
1. BIG SIZE (consist of 4 elements)
Pros: lots of free space, good weight-lifting ability
Cons: storage, transportation and assembly inconveniences

2.horizontal stabilizer with a lifting profile
Pros: high tail-unit stiffness, an opportunity to shift the normal centering back by 15-20% (in fact – by 50%)
Cons: none

3. two-fin tail
Pros: good propeller blowing (a smaller surface area is ok).
Cons: two servos are required

4. Rigid fastening of the wings and the tail (polyethylene bolts with captive nuts).
Pros: clear geometry, simple and reliable fastening.
Cons: 5kg of total weight can contribute to destruction in case of hard touchdown.

5. All these pros and cons are typical of twin-engine planes.
6. Сlark - Y15 wing profile (just the right thing for a cargo plane).

My RC Metal 1/10 semi-replica of the SU-102 (dedicated to WoT fans...)

Here is my RC semi-replica of a Soviet self-propelled gun. Metal only. This is an almost completely kitchen-table product, as I used a minimal amount of equipment and tools as I built it. I didn’t face any difficulties casting the aluminum mantlet, and I wrote articles on that earlier:

Crash-proof quadcopter. The basics of how to avoid major repairs (Pt. 1, Mechanics)

I've been flying an F450 quad via FPV for about 4 years now. It endured many crashes (free-falls), some were caused by my actions, while some had to do with the work of electronics.

In this article I highlighted a few techniques/rules that will help you prevent serious damages:

This post is more of an answer to than a question about “why my ppm goes fritz”. Well, I'm going to take a roundabout approach to the issue, and I hope those holding a quadcopter remote control in their hands will learn a good thing.

Now I'm about to assemble my first frame. This topic is quite new and popular. Instead of retelling what you can read online, I’m going to tell you about the innovations, which have been introduced in this design. Also, I would like to recommend all hobbyists from Nizhny Novgorod who have all types of copters in possession, including mini FPV 250, to refer to this new VK.com community: http://vk.com/copter250. Please, join now!
And one more thing: in the end of the post you can read about simulators, which I use.

Aerodynamics for Dummies

Unfortunately, I couldn’t find a single RC-hobbyist-oriented article on aerodynamics in forums, diaries or blogs, and there were no good references to the subject. Meanwhile, it raises a world of questions, which particularly concern novice hobbyists, and many of those who have dismissed themselves from the ranks of newbies won’t turn a hair to peep into a textbook. Well, I’m here to fix that!)))

I won’t enlarge upon it, because it takes as much as scientific research to highlight all aspects and a whole bunch of abracadabra formulas! All the more so, I won’t obliterate you with scary terms like the Reynolds Number, about which the most curious of you can read later.

Well, let’s make a vow: nothing except the minimum RC-hobbyist-oriented stuff!)))

How to make wheels for lightweight RC airplanes using shrink tubing and other makeshift materials.

|

My first hand-crafted RC aircraft was a lightweight Cessna 150. I cut wheels out of a ceiling tile, and, even though they looked beautiful, they collapsed during takeoff. The little incident got the rats in my attic to run around for new ideas. I wanted a quick, reliable and aesthetically vivid solution. I realized that manufactured wheels were less than expensive, but I knew the delivery service was slow as hell. What I found online was the technology of crafting wheels from foam rubber or using old sneakers. In my house I found neither.
